Posted By: Kasey Naylor   4/20/2016
Many hours of hard work begins to pay off in the first three months of every year for many students involved in
Honey Grove ISD’s Agriculture Science Program that are involved in raising and exhibiting livestock.  Honey Grove
FFA students have traveled many miles this spring and attended livestock shows all over the state of Texas.   Stock
shows at Ft. Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, and Austin all had students representing Honey Grove ISD.
In January at the Ft. Worth Stock Show Honey Grove FFA members Allie Morrison, Chandler Williams, Allie Towery,
Audrey Fowler, Raney Hodges, Taylor Norris, Brianna Cravens, Cade Mahan, Whitney Mahan, and Bree Cason all
exhibited their livestock projects.  Some highlights of Ft. Worth include Audrey Fowler winning her class in the
Other Registered Breeds division in the Junior Breeding Heifer Show. Both Taylor Norris and Raney Hodges placed
5th in large classes with their junior market barrows and both qualified for premium money. Bree Cason placed 3rd
with her middle weight Hereford Steer and sold her steer for almost $10,000.
In February Raney Hodges represented Honey Grove at the San Angelo Stock Show.   Raney’s gilt placed 2nd out of
37 in the middle weight Berkshire class in the Certified Texas Bred Registry Show and qualified for the sale and sold
her gilt for $3,250.00.
Also in February Taylor Norris, Whitney Mahan, Cade Mahan, Audrey Fowler competed at the San Antonio
Livestock Exposition.  The highlight of this trip was Taylor Norris being selected as the Grand Champion Market
Barrow.   Along with winning a $10,000.00 college scholarship, Taylor sold her barrow for $65,000.00. Also at San
Antonio Whitney Mahan placed 2nd with her light weight Santa Gertrudis Market Steer.  Whitney qualified for the
sale of champions and sold her steer for $5,300.00.  During the Breeding Heifer Show also in San Antonio Audrey
Fowler won her class of Other Registered Breeds and went on to be named division champion.
In March many Honey Grove ISD students made the trip to Houston to exhibit their projects.  During the first week
of Houston Cade Mahan, Chandler Williams, Hayden Lane, Allie Morrison, and Lucas Morrison competed in the
Commercial Steer Feeding and Management contest.   All five students were very competitive and were able to
bring home over $35,000.00 combined as a group.  During week two of Houston, Audrey Fowler exhibited her ORB
heifer where she won her class and was reserve division champion.   Week Three of Houston included Market
Barrows and Market Steers.  Honey Grove FFA students participating included Raney Hodges, Bree Cason, Maddie
Cason, Whitney Mahan, Cade Mahan, Hayden Lane, and Avery Caffee.  Raney Hodges placed 6th with her Market
Barrow and made the sale of champions.  Also making the sale were Whitney Mahan who placed 2nd in the
heavyweight Limousines and Bree Cason placed 5th in the heavyweight Simmentals.
Rodeo Austin finished out the year for HG FFA students.  Taylor Norris, Audrey Fowler, and Maddie Cason all took
projects to Austin.  In Austin Taylor Norris won a barrow class and qualified for the sale.  Audrey Fowler places 2nd
with her ORB heifer and Maddie Cason placed 5th with Brahman steer.
Since Ft. Worth started in January until Austin ended in March Honey Grove FFA students have brought back over
